What is peat?
Peat is a dark, fibrous accumulation of partially decomposed and disintegrated organic matter found in wet areas, and usually comprising residues of plants such as mosses but also including sedges, trees, and other plant.
Peat forms in wetlands or peatlands, variously characterized as bogs, moors, muskegs, pocosins, mires, and peat swamp forests. It is typically formed in temperate, humid environments where the decomposition is slowed and the land is waterlogged.
Peat fields are continuously growing natural biological systems
Properties of peat
Fibric peat
is the least decomposed, and characterized by sufficiently high acidity, low ash content, low nutrient content and very high ability to absorb and retain water. Fibric peat consists of remnants of wild rosemary, sphagnum mosses and cotton grass and has low ash content in combination with high acidity.
Hemic peat
– in terms of conditions of formation and decomposition, this type of peat occupies an intermediate position between the Fibric and Sapric peats.
Sapric peat
is the most decomposed, and formed on lower parts of the terrain, in the lowlands, along river banks, weediness of lakes with water rich in calcium, salts, and with a sufficient supply of nutrients. Sapric peat has an average or weak acidity, sometimes its medium reaction is close to neutral. In addition, it has a higher ash content and a higher content of nutrition elements.

A HISTORY OF THE FIELDS
The development of peat in the area of Vasil’yevskiy Mokh began in 1886.
The first attempt to start operation of the swamp Vasil’yevskijj Mokh was made as early as 1858. A paraffin plant was built for dry distillation of peat.
Traces of this plant and excavation channel can be seen to this day.
In 1886, the swamp was bought for by an Electric Society for a local power plant purposes.
In 1925 – 1926, an exploration study of the peat deposit was carried out, and in 1938 a detailed exploration was completed.
The development of peat was conducted in different ways:
1927 – 1936: by means of elevation
1936 – 1957: by hydraulic method
1957 – present time: by milling
